Below you will find a small selection of cosmetics made without chemicals, and in some cases completely organic.

Even though (frightening) studies have shown that using a chemical-laden cosmetic even just once results in traces of the toxins in our bodies, it’s important to realize that the continued use of multiple toxic products over time and the chemical build-up in our systems is what takes the toll on our health. It’s especially important to be conscious of the products you use during pregnancy, because they can affect your baby, you, and your breastmilk.

With that said, take a look at these safe products. No chemicals seeping into your body from these. Whew!

In no particular order…

For your face:

Gourmet Body Treats powder

Gourmet Body Treats Mineral Foundation, 10 grams

$11.00 at Gourmet Body Treats

The only foundation on the market that’s completely chemical-free!A non-drying powder foundation, it seals in moisture for those with dry skin yet doesn’t clog pores for those with oily skin. It also won’t “break up” in response to oil, but remains flawless throughout the day. It is wonderful for those with acne as it helps treats and soothe, and also provides excellent coverage for hiding skin conditions like rosacea and spider veins. Sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Burt’s Bees Natural Cosmetics Vanishing Facial Powder

$15.99 at drugstore.com

Formulated with all natural good-to-the-skin ingredients, absorbs skin oil and leaves your face looking fresh and flawless. Widely available at drugstores and possibly where you currently buy your cosmetics.

Longcils Boncza Longcilclassic Cake Mascara, Noir
Longcils Boncza Longcilclassic Cake Mascara
$30.00 at Beauty.com

Go back to the days of glamour-girl makeup with this retro chic cake mascara. Rated among the highest at Skin Deep for being non-toxic, it will not harm you or the environment. Plus, how much fun would it make the mundane, repetative task of applying makeup with it’s old-fashioned silk brush and cute case? It also lasts longer than traditional mascara, so the price would ideally average out in the long run.

::5/1/08 UPDATE:  The ingredients in this product differ from what is listed on Skin Deep’s Cosmetic Database. Apparently the manufacturer provided a false list by “mistake”. So this mascara actually rates as a 5, not a 1 as previously stated.

Hibiscus Natural Flush Mineral Blush
Zosimos Botanicals Hibiscus Natural Flush Mineral Blush

$10.00 at ZosimosBotanicals.com (or $1 for a sample)

Another top-rated, non-toxic makeup product and company. Zosimos is a family owned and operated green business whose products are handcrafted in small batches using gentle plant-based raw materials. Their site offers a wide selection of cosmetics, bath, body, and personal care products including even perfumes and candles- and 110 samples of their stuff. (We love cheap samples!) Excellent if you are thinking about trying out some natural cosmetics and want to see how they perform before you commit to (and pay for) the full-sized versions.

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care Mascara Lash Color, Black
Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Volumizing Mascara

$23.50 at Beauty.com

Lashes are plumped and protected by beeswax, rose and candelilla waxes combined with silk powder. Soothing black tea and eyebright extracts care for the delicate skin around the eye. Neem leaf extract strengthens lashes. Made in Germany. If you are like me and used to buying $5 Maybelline mascara, this is a bit pricey. But hopefully the quality and health benefits will outweigh that point…

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care Pure Care Coverstick, Natural 01

Also try their lip gloss & lip balm.

I did an intensive search for the entire ingredient list for Longcils Cake Mascara. This is what I finally found:

Ingredients:

Cera Alba, TEA Stearate, Acacia Senegal, Agua, Gylceryl Abietate, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Parfum, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Hydroxycitronellal, 2, 4 Tert Butylbenzyl Propionaldehyde, Linalool, Hexyl Cinnamic Aldehyde, 3 Methyl 4 3 Butene 2 One (2,6,6-Trimethyl-2-Cyclohexane-1-Yl), May Contain (+/-): CI 77499, CI 77007, CI 77288, CI 77491, CI 77492

With this information, EWG rates it at a 5.

I was hopeful, too. But, despite most of the ingredients being relatively non-toxic, the parabens bump up the danger.

Sincerely, Janice

A P.S.: This does not show on EWG. I had to enter the information in the database.

Hi Janice,
The Environmental Working Group (EWG)’s Cosmetic Safety Database lists Longcils Boncza Longcilclassic Cake Mascara as the safest mascara they’ve tested, with a low score of 1.
This is the mascara I personally use.
However, because of your comments I just checked the ingredient list on my product, and it matches the list you provided- different ingredients than the EWG list. Apparently other consumers have noticed this also in the past few months, yet no one has revised the score in the database. I, along with these other people, purchased the product because of it’s low score and relative safety compared to other mascaras, and am now quite upset with the manufacturer for providing false information.
So thank you for making us aware of this… we will be urging the EWG to update the info and score so this does not happen to others.
